I’ll be greedy and say yes…….

For PhD we are given a Tax-free stipend of around £15K a year-this is for us to cover accommodation, travel, food, living costs. i.e take home salary!

I’ve now finished my 3 years of funding…..(I have a year until hard deadline by which time I must submit my PhD). So at the moment I’m living off what I’ve saved from this and earned from teaching.

I’m in the process of job hunting! I would never want to be strikingly rich but a decent wage(eg 20K a year would do me nicely…)

I’ve received lots of emails from investment banking companies wanting to hire me(they google and target people doing maths/physics PhDs….”transferable skills”) and offering to pay a 6 figure salary. I couldn’t do it. I once replied saying
“If I wanted to earn a sick amount of money at the expense of the most vulnerable in society I wouldn’t be doing a PhD(basic stipend)”
The reply I got was comedy gold of contradictions….

With all the cuts(austerity measures….don’t believe it, there is an alternative) science is at threat of having funds cut and hence jobs reduced/salaries cut. Please do get behind the “Science is Vital” campaign 🙂
        Thank you,
        Maire
